Robert Battle a pris la direction artistique de l’Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater en juillet 2011, à la demande de Judith Jamison, devenant ainsi la troisième personne à diriger la compagnie (depuis sa création en 1958).
Depuis 1999, Robert Battle a collaboré avec la troupe en tant que chorégraphe et artiste-associé. Ses créations sont souvent présentées par la compagnie principale de l’Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (en réalisant notamment le ballet Love Stories avec Judith Jamison et Rennie Harris) mais aussi par la compagnie junior (Ailey II) et les élèves de l’Ailey School.
BIOGRAPHIE
Robert Battle commence la danse dans un des quartiers périphérique de Miami : Liberty City. Malgré un handicap (malformation des jambes dès la naissance), il suit la section "danse" d'un programme spécialisé en Arts au sein de son lycée, puis intègre la Miami School of Arts. Enfin, il achève ses études à la Juilliard School, (direction : Benjamin Harkarvy), où il rencontre son mentor Carolyn Adams, qui fut danseuse soliste à la Paul Taylor Dance Company. Suite à l’obtention de ce diplôme, il danse en tant qu’interprète dans la Parsons Dance Company de 1994 à 2001, dirigée par David Parsons, également ancien danseur soliste de la Paul Taylor Dance Company.
Dès 1998, Robert Battle commence à réaliser des chorégraphies et fonde ensuite sa propre compagnie – Battleworks Dance Company – en 2001, dont le premier grand spectacle a lieu en 2002 à Düsseldorf (Allemagne), représentant les Etats-Unis à la World Dance Alliance’s Global Assembly. Sa compagnie se produira au Joyce Theater, au Dance Theater Workshop, à l’American Dance Festival et au Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Robert Battle crée aussi de nouvelles pièces ou remonte les ballets qu’il a créés pour le Hubbart Street Repertory Ensemble, la River North Chicago Dance Company, la Koresh Dance Company, Introdans (Pays-Bas), Paradigm Dance et le Ballet de Memphis.
Il dirige également des résidences universitaires sur tout le territoire américain et donne des « master classes » un peu partout dans le monde.
Robert Battle s'est vu attribuer le titre honorifique de " Masters of African American Choreography " par le Kennedy Center for Performing Arts en 2005 et a reçu la prestigieuse récompense de la Fondation Princesse Grace en 2007. En juillet 2010, il a été invité à prendre la parole à Turin au sein du programme « Leaders » des Nations Unies.
Robert Battle poursuit la politique de la compagnie : présenter les chefs d'oeuvre d'Alvin Ailey, ouvrir le répertoire, susciter des créations et toucher un large public, en développant des animations pour les jeunes et des ateliers de formation à la danse.

Robert Battle became Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in July 2011 at the personal selection of Judith Jamison, making him only the third person to head the Company since it was founded in 1958. Mr. Battle has a long-standing association with the Ailey organization. A frequent choreographer and artist-in-residence at Ailey since 1999, he has had numerous works performed by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, and students of The Ailey School. The Company’s current repertory includes his ballets The Hunt, In/Side, and Love Stories (a collaboration with Ms. Jamison and Rennie Harris). Mr. Battle’s journey to the top of the modern dance world began in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami, Florida. He showed artistic talent early and studied dance at a high school arts magnet program before moving on to Miami’s New World School of the Arts, under the direction of Daniel Lewis and Gerri Houlihan, and finally to the dance program at The Juilliard School, under the direction of Benjamin Harkarvy, where he met his mentor Carolyn Adams. Upon his graduation from Juilliard, Mr. Battle joined the Parsons Dance Company and danced with them from 1994 to 2001, and he also set his own choreography on that company starting in 1998. Mr. Battle then founded his own Battleworks Dance Company, which made its premiere in 2002 in Düsseldorf, Germany as the U.S. representative to the World Dance Alliance's Global Assembly. Battleworks subsequently performed extensively at venues including The Joyce Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, American Dance Festival and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. He has also created new works and restaged his ballets for such companies as Hubbard Street Repertory Ensemble, River North Chicago Dance Company, Koresh Dance Company, Introdans, PARADIGM, and Ballet Memphis. He has regularly conducted residencies at universities throughout the United States and gives master classes around the globe. Mr. Battle was honored as one of the “Masters of African American Choreography” by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2005, and he received the prestigious Statue Award from the Princess Grace Foundation-USA in 2007. In July 2010, he was a guest speaker at the United Nations Leaders Programme in Turin, Italy.
