"Occidents"

Jocelyne Alloucherie's installation comprises large format black-and-white photographs and three-dimensional architectural elements. It provides an introduction into a universe at once poetic and critical that includes spectator and work in the same set-up, a place for passage and vision which stages the conditions of perception of images by framing the look. Whether images of architecture, ordinary places, or even landscapes, they were captured in the course of urban wanderings and sometimes used long after the shooting.

In Occidents Jocelyne Alloucherie draws up the profile of western cities. While these cities differ in their outlines, they also tend towards one and the same archetypal organization of urban space that gradually substitutes for all others. Assuming the position of the stroller at the approach of dusk, the photographer plays with the perspective created by rows of building fronts. The shapes of oppressive cliffs lining the streets, deep gorges opening onto absent horizons and empty skies, emerge from their accumulation.

Jocelyne Alloucherie was born in Quebec in 1947 and has presented over 25 personal exhibitions in the major cities of Quebec, in Canada, in Europe, in Tokyo and New York. Her name and her works appear in important public museum collections in Quebec, in Canada, as well as abroad: the Maison du Québec in Los Angeles, the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain (FNAC) in Paris, the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain in Geneva, and the Centre d'art contemporain de Vassivières (France). She was awarded several prizes, including the Prix du Gouverneur général du Canada and - in 2002 - the Prix Paul-Émile Borduas, which the Government of Quebec annually confers on an artisan or an artist for his/her body of work in the fields of visual arts, the trades of art, architecture and design.

The artist is represented in Paris by the Galerie Françoise Paviot, in Tarragona by Galeria FORVM, in New York by The 511 Gallery, and in Montreal by Roger Bellemare.
